For this paper, you’ll explore ONE of these hallmarks in detail. (You’ll also describe how this particular regime came to power). You should end your paper with a brief judgement on why you do, or do not, consider this state to be legitimately totalitarian.

Use these questions when discussing the seizure of power:

The seizure of power:

How did the current leader in your chosen state come to power?

Was it a legitimate (democratic) accession, or did this leader force his/her way into power?

Is this leader appointed for life, or subject to the electoral process?

If there are elections in this country, are they generally free and fair?

Then, specifically, use these points to address in the remainder of your paper

Totalitarian terror:

Does a secret police exist to monitor the population?

Does the state jail political activists?

How does this state monitor and deal with threats from within?

Are there examples of challenges to the regime’s authority that were put down by force?

 

Format and Research:

The paper should be about 7 pages in length, double spaced, 12 pt. font. That is about 1900 words. You are free to use the websites I’ve listed on Blackboard in your research, but I am expecting you to find about five more sources on your own. You should have 10 sources for the final paper. Sources should be specific and relevant to your research. Do not use general, encyclopaedic sources like Wikipedia and online encyclopaedias- they are useful for general research, but shouldn’t be cited in your paper. These sources will not be counted towards your ten sources.

You should properly cite all of the websites, books and/or articles that you use in your research. I don’t mind if a majority of your sources are websites, but I would like to see two journal articles in your mix of sources. I will say more about source and citations in class. I would also like you to footnote all of your citations as you write. I will provide much more information on this in class.
