Service Learning on Medical Students Cultural Competence

Abstract

Service learning is an effective mode of instruction that is congruent with the philosophies of medical education; however, service learning has not been universally incorporated into U.S. medical school curricula. Cultural competencies and leadership skills mastered through service- learning experiences help to enrich student learning with real-world encounters. The proposed study will assess the effect of a service-learning experience on medical students’ servant leadership and cultural competence. The study also seeks to determine if the demographic factors of age, gender, ethnicity, and medical specialty influence medical students’ servant leadership and cultural competence. This investigation will employ a quantitative design utilizing two validated survey instruments. The surveys to be utilized in the study include (a) the Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ) and the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals-Student Version (IAPCC-SV). It is hypothesized that participation in a service-learning experience will result in higher self-rated servant leadership and greater cultural competence for senior medical students. It is further hypothesized that there will be a correlation between the selected demographic factors and increased servant leadership and cultural competence. As a result of the outcomes, additional service-learning opportunities may be warranted to help medical students enhance these skills and enrich clinical training. CHAPTER 2: Literature Review

Given the current healthcare crisis, it is imperative that physicians emerge as leaders capable of fostering relationships across the healthcare system, making meaningful contributions to patients, the community and the practice of medicine ( Trastek, Hamilton, & Niles, 2014). Despite the consensus on the importance of both leadership and cultural competence to physician effectiveness, limited research has been directed toward examining the relationship between these two skills in the clinical setting. Investigating the effect of service learning on medical students’ cultural competence and servant leadership skills is the focus of this study.
