St. Mark’s aims to prepare young men to assume leadership and responsibility in a competitive and changing world. To this end, the School professes and upholds certain values. These values include the discipline of postponing immediate gratification in the interests of earning eventual, hard-won satisfaction; the responsibility of defending one’s own ideas, of respecting the views of others, and of accepting the consequences for one’s own actions; and an appreciation for the lively connection between knowledge and responsibility and the obligation to serve.
I would write it as if you had a 6 yr old son entering the most demanding academic institution in Texas. A balance of humility yet confidence, real world experiences + academic base + athletics serve as the platform for excellence.
Imagine teaching delayed gratification…how do you defer it…..Lego toy today vs saving money for tomorrow. Athletics teaches you life.
I think you should have an open mind to what will be effective, and we will weave our child into the work.
Here are some themes surrounding those four topics. 1. Delayed gratification – teaching humility. People that delay gratification are more successful with their career, relationships, health, finances, and really all areas of life. Humility teaches a kid that this could be your last job if you don’t perform, and this could be your last relationship if you don’t carry your responsibility, and this could be your last dollar if you don’t save it. If you study the great depression, people that experienced that time frame did not take things for granted. That’s humility. The way we teach that is a reward system to defer gratification. Save vs. spend mentality across all subjects.
Regard topic 2, hard-won satisfaction, my son plays many sports – soccer, football, piano, on and on. Athletics teach you how to prepare and climb to the pinnacle of championship competition. When you do that, you ignite an insatiable appetite for winning that teaches you how to execute during the most intense situations. That is life.
Re topic 3, defending one’s own ideas…..layer in discussion about instilling confidence. Confidence allows a person to find patterns in chaos, articulate action plans, and communicate clearly while staying focused on the human aspects and trials of leadership. And finally topic 4, the appreciation of lively connection between knowledge and responsibility, we challenge our son to do courageous things. He’s zip lined, bungee jumped, and visited many exotic locations at a relatively young age. Overall, the physical, emotional and intellectual experiences challenge him to see the tremendous value of self-trust when he exceeds his usual limits. I look forward to seeing your revised work. I am very thankful for the work that you do.
