Assignment 1: Rationale and Analysis for Agency Selected, Part 1 Introduction The agency I chose to speak about is called The Department of Veterans Affairs. This agency has been around for a long time and its purpose and goal is to aid our Veterans in every endeavor as they serve our country. The establishment of the Veterans Administration came in 1930 when Congress authorized the President to “consolidate and coordinate Government activities affecting war veterans.” The three component agencies became bureaus within the Veterans Administration. Brigadier General Frank T. Hines, who directed the Veterans Bureau for seven years, was named as the first Administrator of Veterans Affairs, a job he held until 1945. (The Department of Veteran Affairs, 2014). VA’s five core values underscore the obligations of VA’s mission: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence. Each acronym spells out I – CARE. This acronym is supposed to remind each VA employee of the importance of their role in this Department. See below for what each mission word stands for within the Department of Veteran Affairs: Integrity : Act with high moral principle. Adhere to the highest professional standards. Maintain the trust and confidence of all with whom I engage. Commitment: Work diligently to serve Veterans and other beneficiaries. Be driven by an earnest belief in VA’s mission. Fulfill my individual responsibilities and organizational responsibilities. Advocacy : Be truly Veteran-centric by identifying, fully considering, and appropriately advancing the interests of Veterans and other beneficiaries. Respect: Treat all those I serve and with whom I work with dignity and respect. Show respect to earn it. 2 | P a g e
