Package Challenge

The Package Challenge is the final design challenge of the semester. This challenge allows you to put together a professional looking portfolio of marketing materials for your organization.

 

The Package Challenge has a number of parts:

 

1. Revised/Finalized Poster

 

2. Revised/Finalized Mailer
3. Multipage document

 

The Revised/Finalized Poster

One of the first challenges we worked on was the Poster Challenge. The final output of that challenge was a well-formed and nearly complete poster for your organization. For the Package Challenge I want you to take that poster design and do some further review and revision. You have a better sense of the cognates than you did when creating the initial poster. How can you apply that knowledge to make your poster even better?

 

The version included with the package must show clear revision over the version presented in the Poster Challenge. This does not mean that the poster must be completely redesigned, but there needs to be a clear sense that you have revisited the document before placing it in the package.

 

The Revised/Finalized Mailer

Just like with the revised and finalized poster, you have a whole semester of learning behind you know. Apply that to the review and revision of your mailer design to best represent your organization.

 

Again, the version included here must show clear signs of revision.

 

The Multipage Document

This document is the heart of the Package Challenge. The task is to create a document that is a minimum of ten pages in length. The audience, purpose, and context of the document are up to you, but the document should be part of a whole with the poster and mailer you have already created – in other words, your multipage document needs to continue to build your organization’s ethos that has been established in these earlier documents. Make sure that your document evidences your understanding of the design cognates we have been learning about all semester long in the reading assignments.

 

(Hint – you want to have a clear sense of what cognates you’ve decided to focus on and why for the next assignment)

 

You can approach this document in many ways. You may want to produce a company overview brochure that provides your audience with more detail about your organization. You might want to produce a user guide. You might want to create a volunteer handbook. You might want to produce an investor prospectus or even a funding proposal. The options for the type of document you choose to create are limitless. However, all documents must meet some universal requirements:

 

• Be at least ten pages in length

 

• Include a front cover

 

• Include a well-balanced mix of graphic and text

 

• Make use of the font and branding specifications developed in the Logo, Poster, and Mailer Challenges

 

• The multipage document needs to be a part of a whole and work in unity with your earlier document

 

• Include appropriate navigational tools for the reader – i.e., page numbers, headings, textual organization schemes (call out boxes, text columns, labels, etc.), table of contents (if needed), and others.

 

• DOES NOT use a pre-made template, but rather is a design of your own making— a design that relates to the designs created for the poster and mailer so that the package has an overall sense of unity and brand

 

Apart from those requirements, you are open as to what you include and how you include it in the multipage document. I do expect that the text presented in this document is your original text, is related to the organization you have created, and is presented grammatically and mechanically correctly.

 

When submitting the Package Challenge combine all files into a single file for submission with documents arranged in the following order:

 

• Poster

 

• Mailer

 

• Multipage Document

 

This assignment has two drafts. See Blackboard for due dates and point values.

 

Please note that when grading the first draft receives all of the possible points if I determine that it is a complete draft – meaning all components are included and in reasonably complete form. If the draft is not complete, I will deduct points accordingly.
