Background:. How mass media portrays crime can be instrumental in creating public fear of crime. Continuous coverage of any issue, including a particular crime, is likely to affect public attitudes. Even when media portrayal of crime is exaggerated or inaccurate, the public often continues to believe images depicted in newspapers, movies, and television shows, as well as on the Internet. Persistent exposure to crime stories may lead the public to believe that crime is rampant and that they are likely to be the victim of violent crime at anytime.
