HIST/AAAS 106: East Asian Civilizations
East Asian Civilizations is an introduction to the geographies, cultures and modern historical experiences of East Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea. In addition to overviews of each of these countries, the course will focus on several topics illustrating both the unity and diversity of East Asia: perceptions of each other, of the West and by the West; the religious/philosophical traditions of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism; the role of imperialism in modern East Asia

The class will meet each week for two hours of lecture and one hour of discussion (in discussion sections). The lectures will involve slides and occasional Flms. Requirements for students in 106B taking this as a Composition (C) course consist of a 3-4 page thematic paper (10%), an 8-9 page essay relating to Chinese philosophy and religion (20%), a 7-8 page book review (20% each), one in-class examination (25%), and a Fnal examination (25%). ±or those students in 106A, three examinations (two in-class and one Fnal for 25% each) and a 7-8 page book review (25%) will be required. All paper submissions should be made through Turnitin by 11pm on the due date.
