Audience and Instructions
The document will be formatted appropriately using MLA or APA style using TNR 12 pt. font and meet length requirement (3 – 4 pages). Imagine your reader has never read the text and your job is to convey the author’s thesis, intended audience, types of details and main ideas. Your essay should include an intro, body paragraphs focused on paraphrasing the author’s main ideas and a conclusion.

Summary Process for Writing:
1. Introduction- Include the speaker’s/writer’s name and credentials, publication information (title, source & publication date) overall thesis (topic & focus), position, the key words, types of details, intended audience and purpose for writing (inform, entertain, or persuade) necessary for reader comprehension.
Body and conclusion- Your personal writing habits will dictate part of this process. Some of you may choose to begin with a longer paragraph-by-paragraph summary and then prune it down in successive drafts; others may start with a one-sentence summary of the speaker’s main argument (including thesis and major supporting reasons), gradually developing the summary with supporting ideas.

1. After you have produced a summary for the text, condense words by “cutting the fat” from your longer summaries. If you summary is underdeveloped, you will need to address this deficiency.
2. Finally, check your integration of quotes from the text for accuracy and precision using the Product: Minimum 3 – 4 pages, double-spaced, 12pt., Times New Roman. Adhere to MLA or APA formatting. See A Pocket Style Manual pp. 159-162 (MLA) and pp. 199-206 (APA).
