The society is burdened with the prevalence of mental disorders given minimal resources to render care and treatment to those people having mental disorders, especially in developing countries. The World Health Organization estimates that around 450 million people in the whole world suffer from neuropsychiatric conditions (WHO 2001). This paper aims to provide discuss the common mental disorders in society as well as treatments.

Common mental disorder collectively known, as CMD is a term used to describe mental disorders that usually occur in primary care patients. CMD imcludes depression, anxiety, and somatisation. Women have higher rates of anxiety and eating disorders. Men, however, have higher rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and substance abuse disorders (Hyman, Chisholm, Kessler, Patel, & Whiteford 2006).
