ASSIGNMENT Answer the following question in a 3-4 page position essay:
Should colleges and universities encourage all students to take a gap year after high school before enrolling in and taking college/university classes?
HOW TO ARGUE A POSITION
When I grade your essays I will be looking at the “6 pieces of the argument pie.” I expect your essays to have an effective overview of the issue, a clear thesis, appropriate reasons, convincing support, a focused counterargument, and a productive conclusion. Also remember that the bulk of your essay will be your support. Support comes in the form of examples, facts, statistics, and quotes from authorities.
OUTSIDE SOURCES
For this essay, you are REQUIRED to use at least THREE outside sources to support your argument.
 You must use at least one of the sources I have provided on Blackboard.
 You must use at least one source that you found on your own: this source must either come from a book, magazine, newspaper, or journal in print form OR in electronic form from Saddleback’s Internet Library Database. Webpages are NOT acceptable.
 Your third source can either be one of the sources I provided on Blackboard or another source from the Internet Library Database.
To be clear: do not use Google to find any of your sources. Webpages are not acceptable.
REQUIREMENTS/GRADING  Review Argument! pgs. 246 – 251 to check your formatting.
 Your papers must use 1″ margins and be double spaced in 12pt, Times New Roman font.
 Make sure to follow MLA guidelines in all aspects of your paper (see Ch. 14 in Argument!).
 Proofread your essay! (Typos and carelessness will adversely affect your final grade)
 Make sure to introduce/integrate your sources and incorporate them into your paper effectively.
 Papers that are not at least 3 full pages cannot receive a grade higher than a “C”
 Papers should be between 3 and 4 pages. You do not need to write more than 4 pages.
 Papers lose 1/3 letter grade if a student does not participate in the draft workshop. To participate in the draft workshop, students need to do 2 things: (1) upload a COMPLETED draft of their essay by the due date and (2) read and comment on another student’s essay by the due date.
 Papers lose 1 letter grade every day they are late.
