Attending live Seminars is important to your academic success, and attendance is highly recommended. The Seminar allows you to review the important concepts presented in each unit, discuss work issues in your lives that pertain to these concepts, ask your instructor questions, and allow you to come together in real time with your fellow classmates. There will be a graded Seminar in Units 1 through 9 in this course. You must either attend the live Seminar or you must complete the Seminar alternate assignment in order to earn points for this part of the class.
Seminar: Demystifying the immune system
This unit in Seminar you will be discussing specific aspects of the immune system and applying the information from your Readings to real-life situations. Please review the Reading for this unit and the questions below to prepare for Seminar.
Option 1:
Come to Seminar prepared to discuss the following questions:
- A complete blood count is a standard blood test that is commonly ordered in a clinical situation. Decipher the following case studies to gain insight into the patients’ health.
Refer to the following document to aid in diagnosis:
DeMoranville, V. E. (2013). White Blood Cell Count and Differential. In B. Narins (Ed.), The Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health (3rd ed., Vol. 6, pp. 3565-3568). Detroit: Gale. Case study #1- A patient enters the Emergency Room (ER) with a high fever and fatigue. The complete blood count (CBC) test indicates a high level of neutrophils and monocytes. Lymphocytes are slightly elevated, and all other counts are within the normal range.
- What would the results indicate?
- What questions would you ask the patient to further investigate the cause of their illness? Why?
Case study #2– A patient recently back from traveling abroad enters the ER with stomach cramps, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. The CBC test indicates a high level of monocytes and eosinophils. All other counts are within the normal range.
- What would the results indicate?
- What questions would you ask the patient to further investigate the cause of their illness? Why?
- A low cell count result can also indicate health concerns in some cases. Discuss some possible health concerns related to a low count of the following cells:
- lymphocytes
- neutrophils
- monocytes
- The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) targets CD4+ monocytes and helper T cells. Provide examples of immune impairment that results from HIV infection.
