Search for reviews of I am Cuba on the Internet. Write a one-page discussion describing your impression of how I am Cuba was marketed to filmgoers when it was re-released various times after 1995. How do the critics deal with the film’s heavy-handed Marxist politics?
Part II: 500 words; 75 points.

Write an analysis of the sequence showing the American “gentleman” trying to find his way out of Maria’s neighborhood in I am Cuba. What is the overall significance of his being “lost” in this scene? How do sound, montage, and image composition contribute to the overall feeling and political point of this sequence? Finally, try to comment on whether or not you think this sequence feels “dated.” Could we imagine a similar scenario taking place today, or are Kalatozov’s film and the questions it raises a thing of the past? In order to answer this part of the question, you might find it useful to refer back to Part I (i.e., your survey of Internet sources regarding critics’ views of the film[s]).
