Market context
The motor insurance market is sometimes referred to as the Perfect market , a highly commoditised market with very transparent pricing. This is prompted by the mandatory nature of the product, requiring, by law, all motor vehicle users to possess insurance if they are to use their vehicle on the road .
Market size
The personal lines motor insurance market was worth approximately £8bn as at end of 2013 (please refer to Chart 1). The market has consistently lost money since the mid 1990’s, as highlighted by Chart 21, which assesses the combined ratio (effectively a profit margin ratio) since 1981.
There are around 30m licenced vehicles in the UK2and it is estimated that around 28m of these are insured providing an indication of the available market.
