ENGLISH 1B RESEARCH PAPER
So far, we have written three types of argumentative essays: a position paper, a proposal, and a causal argument. We have also discussed rhetorical strategies like introducing your topic, providing a clear thesis, using a forecast statement, providing reasons and support, anticipating readers’ objections (i.e. counterarguing), and forming an effective conclusion. For this final assignment, you should select ONE of the three argumentative strategies we have learned and use it to write a longer, well-researched paper that also uses all of the rhetorical strategies we have learned.

ASSIGNMENT
Research a topic of your choice, compose an argument, and present your research and argument in an 8 to 10 page, MLA format research paper. Consider picking either a topic affecting the local area, a topic that is currently in the news, or both.
GUIDELINES
 You CANNOT write about any of the topics previously written about for Essays 1, 2, and 3.
 The following topics are also NOT allowed:
o Abortion
o Cloning
o Death Penalty
o Divorce Rates
o Drug Legalization
o Raising/Lowering Drinking Age
o Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide
o Gay Marriage
o Gun Control
o Gangs
o “Obamacare”
o Raising/Lowering Driving Age
o Global Warming/Climate Change
 You must have your topic cleared by me.
SOURCES
 You will be required to use a MINIMUM of 8 sources. (NO WEBSITES)
o Most of the sources you use should support the argument you are making.
o You may find some sources that oppose your argument. These would be good to include and counterargue against.
o You will need some sources that simply to provide background information for your topic so you can create a well-developed introduction.
 Remember, however, that your research paper is an argument, not an expository essay, so these “informational” sources should NOT be the bulk of your research.
REQUIREMENTS/GRADING
 Use MLA formatting throughout your research paper.
o You WILL be penalized for not following proper MLA formatting throughout your paper AND on your works cited page.
o DO NOT attach your annotated bibliography to the research paper. That was a separate assignment. A research paper requires a works cited page, just like all the essays you have written for the class.
 Proofread your essay! Typos and carelessness will adversely affect your final grade.
 Papers that are not at least 8 full pages of text (with proper margins, spacing, and font) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR GRADING.
