Perhaps the best way to demonstrate the viability of a philosopher’s project is to show that modern authors are involved in conversations with philosophers who precede them, and us by extension.  In order to prove that this conversation is happening, you will need to carefully choose the right verb.  I provide you with four examples here:  clarify, extend, complicate, or illuminate, but you may choose other verbs that are more suitable for your point of view.

 

In attempting this assignment, you should try to explore one or two key concepts or ideas, as defined and used by (David L.Haberman). You should then show your audience what a concept or idea in one of our modern essays means and how a clear understanding of the modern essay’s text clarifies, extends, complicates, or illuminates a particular part or point in the philosopher’s arguments.

 

Consider the following options when deciding how to proceed:

1) select and carefully research a term or word in a philosopher’s text (words, people, places, events, and etc.);

2) select and discuss how one or more of the modern essays demonstrates that the authors in our anthology use or respond to the identified concepts in their texts;3) demonstrate something from the surrounding context for both a philosopher and our modern authors (for example, historical information, beliefs at the time the arguments were made, or events that shape the thinking of contemporary readers); or

4) demonstrate something about authorial purpose for modern audiences for the authors in our anthology that is different from or similar to one of the three philosopher’s purpose and audience.

 

At the risk of repeating myself, let me say that your goal for this essay assignment is to help your readers better understand the viability of the work David by showing an on-going conversation between the past and the present.
