Behavioral Objectives

 

What is an Objective

1. A written statement of an intended change
2. A clear description of educational expectations
3. A description of observable student behavior or performance that is used to make judgments about learning

 

Behavioral Objective Describes:

Action to be performed – what do you want the learner to do?

Condition under which the action is to take place – circumstances under which the behavior will be performed

Criteria standard by which to judge the successful performance – how well must the behavior be done?

Examples of Cognitive Objectives

Given a procedure to set up, accurately differentiate between sterile and contaminated articles in 5 minutes.

Given access to all needed equipment, identify all the parts of a syringe that must remain sterile with 100% accuracy.

Examples of Psychomotor Objectives

Given the necessary supplies, the student will be able to insert 2 Foley catheters demonstrating sterile technique by the end of the 2^nd week of clinical experience, as observed by the preceptor.

Given a patient with fluid-electrolyte problems, start a patent IV into the bloodstream in less than 3 attempts.

 

Examples of Affective Objectives

Given a patient with a terminal illness, express at least two feelings experienced in caring for this patient as observed by the preceptor and/or instructor.

Provide emotional support to a patient by using therapeutic communication techniques at least once a day, as described in the journal.
