There is the course description: This course will present a historical development of African American art and cinema. By examining film, as an artifact of material culture, which transmits     values, ideas, attitudes, and assumptions, this course, will investigate the codes of   representation used to construct African- American cultural identity from the late nineteenth                 century to the present day. Specially, we shall investigate how film has been used to culturally                define the parameters of black racial identity; and how black cultural producers endeavored        to carve out a discursive space through film to promote alternate constructions. Through                examining the visual commodities of black and white cultural producers, we shall focus on                how issues of class and caste status, gender, and sexuality informed competing notions of       blackness within the public sphere.
