The indirect advanced practice nursing role has been pivotal in putting nurses on the forefront of the evolution of healthcare. Indirect care advanced practice roles can exist in a wide range of environments including both in and out of the clinical setting, however, indirect care practitioners do not directly engage in hands on patient care.
Rather, indirect advanced practice roles are instrumental in allowing nurses to contribute to the healthcare constructs through” application, integration, engagement, and teaching” (Emanuele & O’Dell, 2011). Presently, there are three roles that are considered indirect care roles in the nursing practice which are the nurse administrator, the nurse informatics and the nurse educator.
